Dear Christine,

I think you are right about the attitudes. Jonah Ncude, a Zimbabwean activist who works in southern Africa, believes that there is a culture that oppresses women. She wrote a piece about it at Pambazuka News that you can read here. http://www.pambazuka.org/en/category/comment/53071

Best,
Nikolaj

My concern is the focus on the need for women to be educated about pregnancy, contraception and sexually transmitted diseases. Attitudes in the male african culture need to be adressed as well, if not more so, in order to reduce the stress of caring for 'unafordable' children and sexually transmitted diseases.

I agree with you, Andy. Rather than providing contraceptives, they should be educated about pregnancy, contraception and the related stuff. That can definitely change their attitude.

I disagree that this has to lead to more deaths, unwanted pregnancies and abortions. There are natural ways to space births as effective as hormonal contraception and more effective than barrier methods. It requires some self-mastery and some education, but it can work--it did in Uganda.
